Sharlene Mawdsley says she’s starting to appreciate the achievement of the women’s 4x400m relay team.

The Newport native ran the anchor leg of the Olympic final as Ireland finished just outside the medals in fourth place.

The team of Mawdsley, Phil Healy, Sophie Becker and Rhasidat Adeleke shaved three seconds off the national record in Saturday’s race.

Speaking to Off The Ball at yesterday’s homecoming on O’Connell Street, Sharlene says she’s proud of their performance:

“I’m now kind of appreciating what we actually did.

“It’s disappointing that we don’t have a little bit of jewelry around our necks to represent it but no we are honestly proud of the performance now.

“It’s just amazing to see what we are doing for young girls.

“I really didn’t think that we were making that much of an impact whatsoever so I’m a bit star struck today that so many people came out to see us but it’s amazing.”
