The Justice Minister announced the drive this afternoon, saying he’s ‘very aware’ of the problems in the force.

He says he’s planning to reform the recruitment and training processes to increase capacity.

Both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have promised to set up a 2nd training college, with fears locally would be a danger to the status of Templemore.

Minister Jim O’Callaghan says he believes new legislation could lead the way for a heavier Garda presence on the streets.
