The Mayor of Clonmel says the construction of a new Garda station will be a boost for the town and surrounding communities.
Having been in the pipeline for years the project has finally gone to tender with works anticipated to start later this year.
The current base for An Garda Siochana on Emmet Street in Clonmel is generally accepted as not being fit for purpose.
Fine Gael general election candidate in Tipperary South Michael Murphy says the new state of the art building will greatly enhance policing in South Tipp.
“This involves the construction of a new Garda Community Engagement HQ for South Tipperary based in Clonmel – located to the rear of the existing public plaza on the on the Kickham Barracks site.
“It’s very much an integral part of the wider masterplan for the redevelopment of Kickham Barracks.”
Michael Murphy says the new HQ will be a major boost not just from a policing point of view.
“I’ve no doubt that this new Garda HQ for South Tipperary will enhance our Garda presence in the town while also facilitating the policing infrastructure for Clonmel and surrounding areas.
“It’s a great boost for Clonmel, it’s a great boost for South Tipperary. I hope that this investment will be a catalyst for other investments across the constituency.”
