Tipperary’s Sharlene Mawdsley is into an Olympic final.
The Newport native powered Team Ireland’s 4x400m women’s relay team into tomorrow’s final with a third placed finish in their heat in Paris this morning.
Running alongside Sophie Becker, Phil Healy and Kelly McGrory, Mawdsley took the baton in fourth place before running a 49.65 second split to cross the line in third place and earn automatic qualification for Saturday’s final.
Speaking to RTE Sport after the race, Sharlene says she’s absolutely buzzing to be in the final:
“I was just like ‘use the girls in front of me’.
“I do get impatient, I probably look super controlled but I always want to make that brave move but I have so much trust in my last 100 in a relay and I was just like ‘top three that’s all we had to do’ and I got the baton in fourth and so close together.
“We’re going into the final with an auto Q, we are absolutely buzzing.”
Saturday’s final is set to get underway at 8.14pm.
