Mawdsley back on track this morning

Having run a personal best in the heats of the 400 metres Tipperary’s Sharlene Mawdsley will be hoping to secure a place in the semi-finals this morning.

The Newport athlete just missed out on automatic qualification in the her heat and will run in the repechage this morning as will Sophie Becker at around 10.20 Irish time.

Meanwhile Ciara Mageean says she is “absolutely heartbroken” she will not be taking part in the Olympic Games this morning.

The current European champion has had to withdraw from the 1500 metre heats due to injury.

Ireland will now be represented in the heats by Sarah Healy and Sophie O’Sullivan.

Those races get underway just after 9am.
