Work to transform Liberty Square in Thurles won’t start until 2018.
A major redesign of the centre of the town is expected to break ground before the end of this year.
Tipperary County Council says work on the project will begin with a car-park off the square first, while Liberty Square itself won’t actually be dug up until next year.
It’s going to the full design stage now before going out to tender, and local Councillors have been anxious to find out if contractors will be asked to work through the night to minimise the impact of traffic and businesses.
But Leas Cathaoirleach of the Templmore-Thurles District Micheál Lowry says that will have to be hammered out in the contract negotiations.
