The critical contributions made by Family Carers in Tipperary needs to be properly recognised.
That’s the call made by local TD Michael Lowry in the Dáil this week during a debate on calls to end Means Testing for carers.
The Regional Group member pointed out that not only do Family Carers enhance the quality of life for those they are looking after but also saves the state an estimated €20 billion annually.
He also highlighted the challenges they face in looking after their loved ones.
“Until somebody experiences the role of a Family Carer they cannot fully grasp the challenges involved.
“Across the country 500,000 people are caring for family members with 10,000 alone in Tipperary. These carers may be parents of children with serious illnesses or disabilities, adults caring for those with complex needs or individuals looking after older family members. In some cases they may be caring for multiple people.
“Carers often face each day with uncertainty – many without any formal preparation or training.”
Deputy Lowry outlined the challenges Family Carers in Tipperary face.
“Many have had to give up their careers leading to financial strain. The physical and emotional toll of caregiving can also be immense with carers often burnout and stress.
“It is crucial that we recognise and support the vital role that carers play in our society.
“The newly established inter-departmental working group tasked with examining means testing for family carers should consider the immense value that carers provide.”
