A local mother of two children with special needs is still struggling to secure a school place for her youngest son.
Sabrina Kelly says he has been failed by the National Council for Special Education and the Department of Education.
5 year old Josh was due to start school this month and was eventually offered a place at Powerstown National School near Clonmel
However Sabrina says through no fault of the school staff it is just not suitable.
“It’s just a room! It’s very unsafe for Josh – wires everywhere, there’s an open toilet in the classroom, he’s be gone out the window in two seconds. There’s no sensory area or an outdoor area for him to regulate himself in and again not at any fault of the school. But this is what the NCSE and the Department of Education are expecting us to send our kids out to and just hope for the best.”
Sabrina is urging the Taoiseach to deliver on promises he made to her during a recent visit to Clonmel.
Simon Harris was approached by Sabrina when he was visiting the site of the new Garda station for the town.
Sabrina says all the empty promises are taking their toll.
“He did sit with us, he met Josh and my other boy Ryan and was saying how sorry he was about the situation….he was going to do this, he was going to do that and nothing has come of that either.
“I think for me at the moment its just the constant empty promises – you get a little bit of hope and then you just get the slap so at the moment my hope is gone.”
