Tipperary TD Alan Kelly says Brendan Howlin needs to reconsider his position as Labour party leader before the next election.

There had been calls by some Labour councillors this month for him to step down with some claiming he is ‘sleepwalking towards oblivion’

Two and a half years on from a crushing election defeat, Labour members are growing more and more frustrated with the lack of solid leadership from the Wexford TD.

Recently, several Labour councillors had raised concerns with the current direction of the party. They had requested meetings with Deputy Howlin but only receivied one on ones rather than a group discussion with the TD.

Speaking on Tipp Today this morning, Deputy Kelly said it was unacceptable not to address concerns raised by the party members.

Significant pressure has been mounting on Deputy Howlin over the course of the summer and he had promised to address the issues at a party meeting in September.

It was too little too late for many, including Deputy Kelly who declared the current leadership had failed to reconnect with voters.

The Tipperary TD finished by stating his commitment to the party and that the future of Labour depended on changing the course they are currently on.
