26 of the 31 Tipperary businesses providing goods and services to Templemore Garda College have lost their contracts with the facility.

The college which was traditionally served mostly by local suppliers now comes under the National Procurement Agency, meaning that companies from across the country are able to tender in order to secure contracts for goods and services at the college.

Only 5 local businesses and suppliers are now being retained under the new rules.

The issue was raised in the Dail by Deputy Michael Lowry who said that jobs will be lost in the region as a result of these local suppliers losing what is essentially their core business.

In reply, Tánaiste Simon Coveney said that he acknowledges that local businesses have not been treated well but insists that Gardai now need to lead by example.
