A pensioner – who was alone in the house at the time – was unaware of the incident but thankfully she escaped uninjured.

The house was sealed off overnight pending a forensic examination of the scene today.

Gardaí say an accelerant was used on the front door however the fire did not take hold and very little damage was caused.

The services of the fire brigade weren’t required.

Clonmel Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity in the Heywood Road or Western Road area late last night or in the early hours of this morning to contact them on 052 6177640.
