Illegal deer poaching a major problem in Tipperary

The claim from the Wild Deer Association of Ireland comes in the wake of the trial of three Carrick on Suir men for the hunting and killing of wild deer.

The horrific crimes were uncovered during the Garda’s Operation Bambi investigation into deer poaching.

They were given two year suspended sentences by Judge Thomas Teehan at Clonmel Circuit Court.

Damian Hannigan from the Wild Deer Association says it’s an issue in many parts of the Premier County right through the year.

Lurcher type dogs are used to chase the deer before smaller; heavier breeds are used to knock them.

The carcases are normally left where the animal is killed with no attempt to take the venison away.

Damian Hannigan says at this time of year the poaching is particularly horrific.
