Ten medieval skeletons have been found in an archeological discovery in Tipperary Town.
Preliminary work was being carried on on the site of an old Chinese restaurant on Fr Matthew St near the Maxol garage when the remains were found.
Tipperary county council had planned to create a social housing scheme with four new homes there.
The National Monuments Service are now surveying the site and it’s not known how it will effect the plans for new housing there.
Local Cllr Anne Marie Ryan Shiner says it’s a significant historical find but she’s worried that badly needed new homes might not be built:
“They found up to 10 skeletal remains and some pottery as well so the National Monuments Association has been brought in now to monitor and there is an archaeologist down there.
“There is a very old well there, the area is known as Tubberbreeda but there has never been really any kind of indication of a decent burial site or medieval remains before so they have found this now.
“While it’s exciting because we’re dying to see what’s going on there, we think they are 16th century the remains and pottery as well, it will have an impact on the proposed housing development.”
