A new report from the Environmental Protection Agency shows that Tipperary’s waterways are slightly cleaner than the national average.

A six-year survey of our waterways says we’ve failed to meet the target of improving water quality by 13 per cent.

The EPA report shows hundreds of rivers and lakes around Ireland have been polluted in recent years.

Only 21 rivers in Ireland are now classed as ‘pristine’.

The quality of waterways in Tipperary has shown a slight increase overall.

However Senior Scientist with the Environmental Protection Agency Shane Boyle says some areas in the county have disimproved since their last survey.

Lough Derg, the Shannon and the Suir are all key elements of Tipperary’s tourism marketing strategy.

However Shane O’Boyle says having clean waterways is critical in a number of other key areas in the county.
