Finance was one of the main topics from this year’s Tipperary GAA convention.
Spending on the Premier’s inter county teams exceeded €2 million for the first time, to a total of €2.175 million, which nationally is only behind Cork and Galway.
This figure represents a 21% increase in spending year on year with an overall deficit of €126,000 recorded.
Speaking on last night’s Extra-Time, local journalist Noel Dundon says the county board have introduced some measures to try and get more funds in:
“The deficit last year was €78,000, the deficit this year is €126,000.
“Costs went up and that’s what led to the bigger deficit but also income went up quite considerably as well through various ways and means.
“What the county board will be trying to do is to consolidate their position going forward.
“They have introduced a number of measures which they hope will make a difference including there is a special finance committee and fundraising committee in place under the jurisdiction of the county treasurer and they will be trying to see where they can come up with extra funds.
Dundon also outlined where some of the main areas where costs arose:
“The whole area of senior hurling costs €765,000 to prepare the team and the senior footballers were just over half a million €571,000.
“It cost €197,000 to win the All-Ireland hurling final, football development was €187000.
“So you’re talking about the increase in total going from €1.8 million last year to €2.175 million this year, that’s not a small increase, that’s quite sizeable and it’s probably unsustainable if that was to go again.”
