A demonstration is being planned in Borrisokane this week over the forced eviction of six refugees families from the Riverside apartments.
It’s due to start at Ss Peter & Paul’s Church at 6.45pm on Wednesday and march through the town to the Riverside Accomodation centre.
Borrisokane Liaison Committee says it’s in support of the families and in protest over the disregarding of a deal made five years ago which agreed that everything would be done to allow the reguees stay once their asylum status was approved.
The current Justice Minister Helen McEntee has told TippFM news that the Department of Integration can’t be expected to abide by the agreement which was made with her department at the time.
Committee PRO Margaret Donnelly says the deal with IPAS and the government should be honoured:
“In 2019 they sat around the table with us, they agreed to this and I can say that ok at the time it was justice and equality were the department but a government agreement.
“It was still an IPAS senior representative that sat at that table with us and IPAS are still in existence.”
