Councillors to request Minister to appoint a horse warden in Tipp

Tipperary County Council are to request the Minister for Agriculture appoint a horse warden in the county.

It comes following cases of severe animal cruelty; including the incident where a number of dead and dying horses were discovered before Christmas in a field at Knocklofty.

Cllr Catherine Carey raised the issue at this month’s full council meeting – where members heard from officials that the council had assisted in removing the dead horses; and medically screening and rehoming the others.

An inter-agency group has also been set up in Tipperary to monitor cases of animal cruelty in the county.

The group, which includes Gardaí, and Department and council officials, will continue to meet until such a time as they believe issues have been adequately dealt with.
