The state-of-the-art CCTV system planned for Fethard would cover all entrance and exit routes to the town.

The community council is driving the move and has held a number of meetings with both businesses and local residents.

It’s a public – private venture involving Tipperary County Council.

A total of 12 CCTV cameras are planned at strategic locations around Fethard including five on Main Street including the Garda Station, at the Tholsel building, on Academy House and at the Convent Hall.

Other infra-red cameras are proposed for Green Street, at the Secondary School on Rocklow Road, at the playground on the Cashel Road, at Kerry Street, Watergate Street & Burke Street and also on the Council buildings in the Valley.

The system will be hosted at the Garda station with the recordings held for a number of months.

The planning authority is due to issue a ruling by the end of May.
