There are calls for the former Clonmel Foods site which was hit by fire over the weekend to be used for social and affordable housing.

The building at Irishtown has lain idle for a number of years – considerable damage was caused to the premises by the blaze which was spotted on Sunday evening.

Planning permission was previously granted for a hotel and retail development on the site but this never reached fruition.

Local TD Mattie McGrath says serious consideration should now be re-zoned for residential use.
