Call for extra beds to tackle hospital overcrowding

The overcrowding problem at University Hospital Limerick won’t be solved until more beds are made available.
That’s the response from Vice Chairman of the HSE West Health Forum to the latest figures which show 4,800 people were left waiting on trolleys at the Emergency Department in Limerick so far this year.

The Hospital at Dooradoyle, which serves North Tipperary, is the worst in the country, while South Tipp General in Clonmel also had 3,100 patients without a bed in the first six months of the year.

Nenagh Councillor John Carroll says the overcrowding crisis is humiliating and degrading for patients – and the government simply has to open up more beds or this problem won’t go away.
