Tipperary Sinn Féin TD Martin Browne has defended his party’s decision to table a motion of no confidence in Tánaiste Leo Varadkar.

Despite it being backed by opposition parties the Fine Gael leader is expected to survive the motion over his leaking of a confidential GP contract to a rival union

The government will also table a counter motion expressing confidence.

Some have accused Sinn Féin of playing politics – which Martin Browne strenuously denied on Tipp Today earlier.

“We fully understand that there is plenty of problems out there. There’s homelessness, the health service, the insurance scandals but lets be honest this government and the previous government have done absolutely nothing for it.”

“It’s all about accountability – no matter what job or discussions you’re in if you haven’t trust in those that are sitting across the table from you, you just can’t have it.”

“We’ve a public sector pay deal coming up at the end of December and the unions are making it quite clear that can’t trust what’s going on.”

Martin Browne says the Taoiseach is backing Leo Varadkar in order to stay in power.

“What Micheál Martin – as leader of our government – should be doing is looking what happened with Barry Cowan, Dara Calleary and Phil Hogan.”

“They were accountable – they had to answer for what they had done.”

“Here we have a perfect example of Micheál Martin trying to keep himself in power and keeping Leo onside.”
