The Dillon Quirke Foundation has been announced as the winner of this year’s Local Hero category in the Best of Tipp Awards.
The shortlist for the various categories was decided by nominations from listeners to Tipp FM following which they then got to vote for their favourites in an on-line poll.
In all there are 15 categories with the winner of the Local Hero award unveiled on Tipp Today this morning.
It’s just over a year since the tragic death of Dillon Quirke during a match at Semple Stadium – since then the Dillon Quirke Foundation has done amazing work to highlight Sudden Adult Death Syndrome
Dillon’s father Dan was a guest on Tipp Today earlier.
“Obviously when Dillon passed there was a big void, a huge void and for some reason or another we came up with the idea of a foundation to help screen young kids from 12 years of age – boys and girls – upwards. There’s two lives being lost a week (to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome) that’s one hundred lives a year – that’s phenomenal. Unfortunately people and parents & young kids don’t realise that. So we felt it would be great if we could do something to help that and bring the numbers down and we’re well on our way to starting now.”
The Local Enterprise Office Tipperary, which supports business growth throughout the county, is a partner in Tipp FM’s The Best of Tipp awards.
The ceremony will take place at the Anner Hotel in Thurles this evening.
