Belgian terror attack foiled

A suspected suicide bomber was shot dead at the capital’s busy Central Station train hub by soldiers yesterday evening.

In March 2016 32 civilians were killed when 3 suicide bombers detonated their belts at Brussels airport – and the city has remained on high alert ever since.

No civilians were killed in this latest attack but a crisis meeting of top Belgian security officials is underway after police neutralised a suspect in one of the city’s busiest stations.

As the metro station and the popular tourist area of Grand Place were evacuated last night, businesses and restaurants were also ordered to close and draw down their shutters.

Several other Metro lines running through the station were also briefly suspended.

Belgian police are calling it a failed bombing and an investigation as to the identity of the suspect and whether they had links to the so-called Islamic State is now also underway.
