A Status Red snow and ice alert is in place until 4 o’clock tomorrow afternoon with heavy snow combined with strong winds leading to blizzard conditions.

Inspector White says no matter how good a driver you think you are, only a fool would take to the roads given the forecast.

County Council offices are closed across Tipperary for the rest of the week – however staff can be contacted on 0761 065000 while the Out of Hours number is 1890 923 948.

Tipperary County Council crews have been salting the motorways and main routes over the last few days.

The local authority’s Severe Weather Team has been meeting on a regular basis.

Co-ordinator Ger Walsh says their outdoor staff will continue to treat priority routes for as long as they can.

Emergency services have been called out to deal with a number of crashes in Tipperary already this morning – thankfully all were relatively minor with no serious injuries reported.

Speaking on Tipp Today earlier Inspector James White urged motorists to slow down and remember that it’s not just their own lives they’re putting in danger.
