The 68 year old was found on the roadside at Poynstown near Glengoole at around 10.20 on Sunday night.

Despite the best efforts of a passerby and ambulance personnel the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Stapleton – who was a bachelor and lived alone – was well known in the local community.

He was just metres from his home when he was struck by a vehicle which failed to stop.

Gardaí in Thurles issued an appeal for information from anyone who may have travelled the Glengoole to Ballysloe road on Sunday night to contact them.

A man in his 40s was arrested yesterday afternoon – he is still being detained at Thurles Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Michael Stapleton’s brother Eugene was killed in a motorcycle crash near the family home around 15 years ago.
