Victims’ advocacy groups want the Commission of Investigation into reports of historic sexual abuse at some religious schools to be carried out in an “expedient” and “victim-centred manner”.

A statutory inquiry has been ordered after almost 2,400 allegations involving 884 alleged abusers were made to a scoping inquiry.

14 Tipperary schools were among over 300 where allegations were made spanning a 30-year period.

Co-founder of Restore Together, Phillip Feddis says the inquiry should be sensitive to abuse survivors:

“The more information which is made public the better. For us it would be that its done as discreetly as possible and as timely as possible.

“You’ve got to really remember that the people who are contributing to this, each time that they’re interviewed its retraumatising, reliving the events of their past is very difficult so we need to make sure this is done as sensitively as possible.”
