They are included in a nationwide list of premises due to be shut down as part of An Post’s plan to save the network and modernise Ireland’s postal services.

However opponents says its another nail in the coffin for rural Ireland.

Earlier this year An Post announced that it has reached a new deal with its postmasters that will see no compulsory closure of post offices, however that didn’t mean that some premises would be shutting .

Now a list of 112 proposed closures released by Fianna Fail Senator Robbie Gallagher show that five post offices in Tipperary will be hit, Ballingarry, Templetouhy, Gortnahoe, Littleton and Clogheen.

Some are closing in consultation with the owners or operators while in other cases the Postmaster/ Postmistress is due to retire.

An Post says its committed to a post office for every community of over 500 people, within 15km of 95% of the population, and 3km in urban areas – however opponents to the plan says the removal of this vital service in rural areas is simply another nail in the coffin for the local communities

And with most traditional Post Office services now operated through banks , the government has been accused of repeatedly and systematically letting down rural Ireland.
