Former Tipperary hurler Mick Murphy who captained the Premier to All Ireland success in 1964 has passed away.
The Thurles native also secured 2 All Ireland Minor medals as well as 8 championship medals with his club Thurles Sarsfield.
Michael Mick Murphy took to the competitive hurling field while at school in Thurles CBS and hit the inter county scene at 15 when he linked up with the Tipperary Minor Team in 1956.
He was an unused substitute that year as Tipp claimed both Munster and All-Ireland titles but got his first All Ireland medal on the field of play the following year when he made the starting 15.
The Thurles Sars man made his Senior debut in the early 1960’s and captained the Premier to victory both at Munster and All Ireland level when they saw off Kilkenny 5-13 to 2-8
Mick Murphy also picked up 8 championship medals with his club Thurles Sars between 1956 and 1964 but a knee injury in a club game against Roscrea ended a short but stunning hurling career at the age of 24. However he remained very much involved with Tipperary hurling over the years since.
He passed away following a long battle with cancer and is survived by his wife Bridget, sons Paul, Aidan and Michael, daughters Fiona and Ciara and extended family.
Michael Mick Murphy will be laid to rest at St Patrick’s Cemetery Thurles following 10 am funeral mass in Bohernanave Church next Monday morning.
