Jack Doyle is the man known as the Gorgeous Gael, the man from Cobh who was a boxing sensation as well as a film star and for a period during the 1930’s was the toast of Hollywood. There are now plans to erect a statue in his honor in his hometown of Cobh but these plans have been slammed by Women’s Aid in particular, who say that his reputation as a violent man who abused his partners, means that any efforts to immortalize him are misguided.
