White Helmets to be presented with Tipperary Peace Award

The choice for the latest Tipperary International Peace Award has proven to be a controversial one.

The award will be presented at a ceremony in West Tipp this afternoon.

The convention has chosen the White Helmets as the recipients for the 2016 award for their enormous bravery and courage in saving more than 100,000 people in war torn Syria.

Upwards of 200 of the unarmed volunteers have lost their lives while saving others.

However their selection has met with some opposition.

Syria-based Journalist Tom Duggan says the group have serious questions to answer about funding they get from the US & UK governments as well as other matters.

He also accused the White Helmets of watching atrocities taking place, as well as celebrating executions.

Mr Nedal Izdden will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Ballykisteen Hotel in Limerick Junction this afternoon.

Among those in attendance for this afternoons ceremony will be representatives of the Government, the UNHCR Ireland, the Irish Refugee Council and UNICEF

Also there will be representatives of the Syrian Community in Ireland and the Irish Syria Solidarity Movement.

Previous winners of the prestigious award include Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai and the most recent winner John Kerry.
