6 million in Florida told to evacuate

More than a quarter of Florida’s population – almost six million people – have been told to leave their homes as Hurricane Irma approaches.

It’s already left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean, where at least 21 people have died.

The storm – which has been upgraded again to the strongest category – has hit Cuba, but largely spared the Bahamas after it changed course.

Irish aid workers in Haiti avoided the worst of the storm yesterday.

Concern’s Gillian Boyle says they were relieved to escape, and are now continuing their ongoing relief efforts around Port au Prince.
