Staff at Bord na Mona’s plant in Littleton will find little solace in the news the company has reported an operating profit of 38 million Euro for last year.
Around 70 full time and a number of part time workers are to be laid off when the briquette factory closes next year.
The move is on the back of a review of operations in Tipperary and Offaly with the site in Derrinlough near Birr remaining as the only peat and biomass briquette factory in the country.
Redundancy talks are ongoing between unions and management – local Fianna Fáil TD Jackie Cahill says these figures show Littleton needn’t fall by the wayside.
