Varadkar: Irish Water expenditure accountability rests with Chairman & CEO

Cabinet Minister says accountability for expenditure at Irish Water rests with the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

The comments from Leo Varadkar come after calls for the Environment Minister Phil Hogan to appear before an Oireachtas Committee to answer about the ¬ 50 million spent on consultants.

Michael McCarthy, who is Chair of the Environment Committee, says he wants to know how much the Minister knew about expenditure.

But the Transport Minister says that is for others to answer.

“The responsibility really lies with the Chair and CEO, so they're the ones that'll be before the Committee – but I'd certainly like to see a breakdown of all the costs” he said.

“I don't believe for a second that it was all spent on consultants reports – I think when we get the details we'll find out that a lot of the money was spent on setting up whole new systems; like an IT system and a billing system for example which will always be expensive and of course would have gone out to tender” he added.
