Tipperary has lowest number of non-Catholics

The first results of Census 2016 were released this morning; it shows that the population is almost 4.8 million – an increase on 3.8 percent from April 2011.

The statistics show that the Premier County had to lowest number of non-Catholics at 12.9 per cent.

This compares with the likes of Dublin City, Dun Laoighaire and Galway City which all recorded over 33% being non-Catholic.

For the first time, same sex marriages and civil partnerships were captured in an Irish Census.

Almost 5,000 people identified themselves in either of these categories.

The average age of people in the country is 37.4 years, up from 36 years in the last Census – and there are 53 thousand more females than males.

In Tipperary the ratio of females to males was 1 to 1 – however women in Tipperary do appear to be living longer as there are only 77 men for every 100 women over the age of 75.

2 million households filled out the Census form on the evening of Sunday the 24th of April 2016.
