New mothers attending South Tipp general Hospital will be able to avail of baby boxes from today.
The boxes originate in Finland and have contributed to a significant fall in infant deaths there, where they have been in use for 80 years.
They are made from durable cardboard and come with a firm mattress, replacing the need for a cot of Moses basket.
They have already been rolled out for new mothers attending hospital in Limerick.
Families recieving a baby box will also have access to Baby Box University, a maternal and childcare education platform.
