The Sisters of Charity have announced they’ll give up ownership of the St Vincent’s Hospital Group – including any stake in the new National Maternity Hospital.

The nuns have confirmed they’ll relinquish their shares in the group with immediate effect and transfer them to a new charity, simply known as St Vincent’s.

A new independent board is to be appointed within 12 months and the land they own at Elm Park will be sold to the Vincent’s group at commercial terms.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Simon Harris has welcomed this morning’s statement in relation to the change of ownership of the St Vincent’s Healthcare Group.

He called the move a significant development for the healthcare sector.

He says it directly addresses the concerns regarding the question of religious influence in the new National Maternity Hospital.
