Former Senator John Hanafin has been appointed consul to aid Russian people living in Ireland or to help Russian visitors to the country.
Russian Ambassador to Ireland Maxim Peshkov attended the event in Thurles this morning.
John Hanafin says the non-political role covers a large geographical area taking in all of Leinster except Dublin, Cavan – Monaghan as well as Tipperary and Waterford.
