Nearly 1,700 on the spot fines have been handed out to cyclists in the past two years.

Latest figures show that breaking a red light is the most common offence accounting for 843 prosecutions

The fixed charge notices were introduced in July 2015 by the then Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe.

Payments of €40 can be levied for seven different offences – they include cycling in a pedestrian area, cycling without reasonable consideration and failing to have lights.
