A man remains in Garda custody in connection with a fatal hit & run near the village of Glengoole on Sunday night.

He was arrested yesterday afternoon following the death of local man Michael Stapleton.

The 68 year old was found on the roadside at Poynstown near Glengoole at around 10.20 on Sunday night.

Despite the best efforts of a passerby and ambulance personnel the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Stapleton – who was a bachelor and lived alone – was well known in the local community.

He was just metres from his home when he was struck by a vehicle which failed to stop.

Gardaí in Thurles issued an appeal for information from anyone who may have travelled the Glengoole to Ballysloe road on Sunday night to contact them.

A man in his 40s was arrested yesterday afternoon – he is still being detained at Thurles Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Michael Stapleton’s brother Eugene was killed in a motorcycle crash near the family home around 15 years ago.
