Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan welcomed the reduction in damage to property – down 8.7 per cent – and public order offences, down 13 per cent.
Sexual offences also fell by almost 6 per cent.
However the latest statistics released by the CSO on recorded crime show an increase in the number of homicides – with more murders recorded over the past 12 months.
The figures show there were 83 homicides in the year ending in the second quarter of this year. That's up 5 on the same period last year.
The number of kidnappings and related offences rose by 31.
