Protest continues at Portumna bog

A protest is continuing this morning at a protected bog near Portumna.

Around 150 turf cutters began their action at Clonmoylan Bog near the shores of Lough Derg yesterday in an effort to prevent Gardai from removing turf-cutting equipment.

A digger and a hopper were seized by the National Parks and Wildlife Service yesterday.

Under the E.U Habitat's Directive Ireland is required to protect and conserve important peatland habitats on raised bogs.
