Promoters of shooting range in Templemore hit back at criticism

The promoters of a shooting range near the Devils Bit in Templemore have responded to concerns expressed about the plans.

People living in the locality are particularly worried about the proximity of the range to a local school.

The plan is to re-open the former Irish Army firing range at Barnane, Templemore – the facility was last used by the Defence Forces in 2000.

Those behind the proposals hope to turn it into a commercial shooting range – however these local people expressed their concern at the plans to Tipp FM.

Those behind the shooting range say planning permission is not needed to re-open the range because of it's previous use by the army – however they will be seeking approval for a building on the site.

Principal of Barnane National School Clare Hanley has very grave concerns about the range.

However the promoter of the development Padraig O'Brien says the layout of the shooting range means the school is not in the line of fire.

He also says people will have a chance to make their views known when the planning application is lodged.
