Pressure mounts on Government to take action over refugees

It comes ahead of a European Commission proposal to relocate an extra 120-thousand people across the European Union to be unveiled next week.

Calls are mounting for a united response to the refugee crisis after pictures were published of the body of three-year-old Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi washed up on a beach in Turkey.

His brother and their mother also drowned.

The Irish government is coming under increasing pressure to do more to help alleviate the migrant crisis.

Aid agency Oxfam say that saving the lives of refugees crossing the Mediterranean must be the top priority for Ireland and the EU.

Last night, Minister Alan Kelly said that he's determined that Ireland will lead the world in tackling the crisis and that we'll accept more asylum seekers in.

However Oxfam CEO Jim Clarken says if this were a financial crisis action would have been taken much sooner.

Meanwhile, a Galway company is sending a team of volunteers to Greece to provide refugees with communications technology.

Disaster Tech Lab says after food and clothing – the ability to contact relatives and access information – is the next most important item for those fleeing war torn countries.

The group – which offers emergency communication services – has offered supports in the past to disaster hit areas such as the Philippines and Haiti.
