O’Sullivan denies criminality in mismanagement of Garda College fund.

Noirin O'Sullivan was responding to the latest article in the Sunday Business Post surrounding an internal audit that uncovered financial irregularities including officers spending public money on gifts, meals and retirement presents for Officers stationed in the College.

Commissioner O'Sullivan says its important to point out that the gardaí commissioned the report themselves, the issues highlighted are legacy ones which date back 20 years and surround accountancy practices that would not be acceptable today but has been informed that there is no misappropriation of funds or criminality because if there was, gardaí would be taking action.

She went on to state that the internal audit is still a work in progress and hasn't been published yet there are recommendations to make sure that the accounting practices which are in place now are on a par with best practice today and those recommendations are being implemented

It’s not the first time the details of the audit have made the headlines with similar articles last October.

However Justice Minister Francis Fitzgerald says the issues raised “were reported by the then Commissioner to the Comptroller and Auditor General back in 2015 and no doubt if the Comptroller and Auditor General wants to investigate this further, he will do so”.
