Thousands expected for final farewell to Foley

Rugby fans from across the country will join with locals from the twin towns of Ballina-Killaloe today for the funeral of rugby legend Anthony Foley.

The former Munster and Irish international died suddenly at a hotel in Paris last Sunday.

Thousands of people queued for hours in Killaloe yesterday to pay their respects to one of Ireland's most popular sporting heroes.

Anthony “Axel” Foley played 62 times for Ireland while he lined out over 200 times for Munster and took over as head coach of the province in 2014.

Stars and fans alike gathered at St Flannan's Church yesterday where the 42 year old lay in repose…..his coffin draped in a Munster flag.

Among them was Ireland coach Joe Schmidt and former coach Eddie O'Sullivan while Paul O'Connell and Keith Wood were among the former players in attendance.

The Leinster team, led by Johnny Sexton and Jamie Heaslip also travelled to Killaloe to sympathise with Anthony Foley’s wife Olive and family.

Axel will be laid to rest in Relig Lua after 12noon mass in St Flannan’s today.

Stewards will be in place on approach routes to direct members of the public to park-and-ride and other parking facilities.

Traffic approaching on the Tipperary side of the bridge for the funeral must park in designated car parks on that side of the bridge.

Meanwhile radio stations across Munster will play 'The Fields of Athenry' at noon today – in tribute to Anthony Foley when it's hoped fans around the province will be able to take a moment to remember Axel.
