INTO calls for decrease in class sizes

The union representing primary school teachers says a quarter of children are in supersize classes of over 30.

21% of children – or nearly 4,000 primary pupils in Tipperary are in classes of 30 or more.

At the moment, the Department of Education provides a teacher for every 27 pupils in a primary school.

However, the INTO says this figure is well above the recommended international best practice of 20 pupils.

But Vice President of the INTO John Boyle, says the next government needs to put plans in place to gradually reduce class sizes over the next 5 years.
