Chernobyl Children International fundraiser

An annual event to raise funds to carry out life saving surgeries on children in Chernobyl will get underway in Dublin later.

The fundraiser aims to generate support for a programme – which will see operations carried out on children who have a condition known as 'Chernobyl Heart' – who would die without the intervention between the ages of 1 and 2 years.

Ireland funds the mission and sends an international team of cardiologists to the Ukraine who perform the surgeries.

The event is being organised by the Road Safety Authority Chief, Liz O'Donnell, for the Chernobyl Children International.

Clonmel native Adi Roche – who is founder of the Irish Aid agency CCI – says the fundraising efforts help numerous children.
