Man dies in workplace accident in North Tipp

A well known agricultural contractor from Newport was killed when he became trapped under the cab of machinery he was working on.

According to Gardaí this incident happened at approximately 8.30 last night at Ballymackeogh on the outskirts of the North Tipperary village.

The 66 year old man – named locally as John Ahern was working on a truck in his garage which is located at the rear of his pub on the Newport road – when the cab of the vehicle fell back pinning him under it.

Emergency services including ambulance personnel and 2 units from Limerick Fire and Rescue attended the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Ahern's remains were later removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem is due to be carried out.

Gardai from Newport and Nenagh are investigating while the Health and Safety Authority has been notified.

It's the second workplace fatality in Tipperary this year, in February, a man in his 40's died while working on the natural gas line in Nenagh.
