Job loses in Clonmel as Iceland announces closure

Iceland has announced its shutting its Clonmel store leaving up to 40 staff with an uncertain future.

The company’s taking the action over a failure to agree a new lease with the landlord of the Showgrounds Shopping Centre which is now in receivership.

However it says it will reopen in Clonmel if a new site can be found.

In a statement to Tipp Fm – the supermarket chain stated that since it bought back the franchise it first established, the company was committed to growing in Ireland and has refitted a number of stores.

However in the case of Clonmel a spokesperson said they were unsuccessful in reaching an agreement with the landlord of the Showgrounds Shopping Centre – which is currently in receivership- and was left with no option but to close.

The retail outlet will shut on August 2nd with the loss of 40 jobs – but the firm says it will look to redeploy staff where possible and re-hire again in Clonmel if a new suitable site can be found.
