New report highlights housing crisis

Ireland is facing ‘a potential tsunami’ of homelessness, unless radical action is taken to increase house building.

That’s according to the social change think-tank Tasc, who’s warning the Government to stop relying on the private sector to supply housing.

Instead, Tasc says the Government needs to double or even triple funding for local authorities to build social housing.

A report by the group says we also need a semi-state body to be set up to provide affordable housing for mixed income groups.

Report author Dr Rory Hearne says current policies are only serving to worsen the crisis.
